on this continent that you founded/lies the heart of europe's prides/senses stripped of mass confusion/silver flowing through the mines/and just a short trip down the trail/where the amazon unwinds/i stumbled upon you/bathing in the light/ your surrounded by the foliage/this might hurt more than you'd like. let's destroy the virgin forest/just like once upon a time. in the desert of south asia/in the fertile crescent sand/you were an empress steeped in legend/and i was but one man/passing through your kingdom/in search of holy land/you set your guards upon me/but i escaped again. let's sow seeds here in this earth/grow olive trees to climb. let's reap wisdom from the folktales/just like once upon a time. in the depths of darkest africa/surrounded by the drums/of warriors and women worn out/down to their very bones/you found a message left in secret/spelled amongst the gathered stones/and crept to where it told you/i would be waiting on my own. this is danger of another shade/another face and stripe/ come devour me in secret/just like once upon a time. as the tigress stalks her prey/in the wastelands of the arctic/i was sure that she would find me/running cross the ice it/was early in the season/the trail was cold for quite some time/but she was waiting when i emerged/and pit her will against mine. you have vanquished all your rivals/you asked that i be brought alive. i can't believe i thought i'd make it out/once upon a time.
when your colours fly at all four poles/and the whole world's been divided/into fiefdoms, tribes and colonies/how will you ever know when/you have had your fill/and this game ends in violence/will you be satisfied to know/that all thats left is silence.
in a stolen golden moment/i had you pinned against the wall/your hands were reaching for my skin/and your body looked so small/i pressed my mouth against yours/and then braced for the fall/but nothing seemed to happen/if it happened there at all.
theres a fever in the air here/the scent of something divine.
i came here to be baptized by you/once upon a time.
in a half remembered phone call/i could nearly see your breath/laced with the possibility/of what hasn't happened yet/and as i lay there in the darkness/i could almost taste your flesh/held there by the throat/in a slow, dangerous test.
your eyes are hungry darling/slip your body over mine/
sing in spanish, like you once did/once upon a time.
i traced your longitude and latitude/with strong and careful hands/whispered secrets in your ear/that you could barely understand/we made a mess of each other/as we explored this vast new land/and then collapsed exhausted afterwards/and lay there in the sand.
i hear the beaches there are lovely/i'd love to share a glass of wine/
with you and watch the sunrise/just like once upon a time.
